  • What is Tree Top doing to ensure the safety of its products?

To ensure the safety and quality of Tree Top juice, we independently test our products to ensure they are well within the regulatory established safe levels. We continually review our processes to make sure the best technology is being used to deliver fresh, safe products.

  • Where can I get more information on this subject?

The Juice Products Association has created a website to provide background on the healthy benefits of 100% fruit juice:  http://juicecentral.org/

Tree Top is committed to the safety and well-being of our customers. We strive every day to ensure all of our products are safe and exceed expectations.

  • What is the shelf life of your product?

Tree Top implemented the use of Best By dates on its products in early 2007.  The shelf life on our products differs by the type of juice or apple sauce, to the size of the container.  Please know that the Best By date which is printed (ink jet stamp) on the container will reflect the shelf life through that date, un-opened.

  • How long can I keep my Tree Top juice after opening?

Tree Top juice does not contain any preservatives, therefore it must be refrigerated after opening. For best quality and freshness we recommend you use within 7 days after opening.

  • How can I tell if a product is spoiled?

Indicators of spoilage would include a change in flavor, smell or appearance.  Smells like vinegar, alcohol, wine or beer would indicate that the product has started to turn.  At this point we highly suggest discarding the remainder.

Our products are pasteurized; this process assures our customers of the safety of consuming our products.

Since Tree Top does not add any preservatives, once a container is opened it must be refrigerated.  For best quality and freshness, use within 7 days after opening.

  • Do your products have corn derivatives?

Tree Top cannot provide a 100% guarantee that products which contain ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are free from corn or corn derivatives.  The ascorbic acid used by Tree Top is manufactured through a fermentation and purification process utilizing a corn-based substrate. The suppliers of this ingredient state that trace amounts of corn or corn derivatives may be present in the ascorbic acid.  Please note that some Tree Top juices contain ascorbic acid, and all Tree Top and Seneca apple sauce contain ascorbic acid.

  • Do I have to refrigerate my juice or apple sauce?

Yes, all juice and apple sauce products must be refrigerated after opening. For best quality and freshness use within 7 days after opening.

  • Are your products gluten and casein free?

Yes, all of our Tree Top juice and apple sauce products are gluten and casein free.

Health & Nutrition
  • How do you substitute apple sauce in a recipe for oil or butter?

It’s easy, and in fact it's a healthier way to bake. Apple sauce adds nutrition and reduces the fat in your favorite recipes for muffins, cakes, brownies or quick breads. Replacing oil, butter and shortening with apple sauce will produce a moist, light cake that is lower in fat and calories and higher in Vitamin C and fiber. Baking experts recommend replacing no more than ¾ of the fat so if a recipe calls for 1 cup oil, substitute with ¾ cup applesauce + ¼ cup of oil.

    For best results:

    • Mix apple sauce with other wet ingredients first.
    • Wait until the oven is preheated before mixing wet into dry ingredients.
    • Mix wet and dry ingredients gently, just until moist.
  • Do you add sugar to your apple juice?

No, Tree Top does not add any type of sugar to our 100% fruit juices.  The sugars that are listed in the nutrition facts come from the fruit itself.  These are known as natural sugars.

  • What is the difference between naturally occurring and added sugars?

It's important not to lump (no pun intended) all sugars into one "bowl." Our bodies could not survive without the basic forms of carbohydrates often referred to as simple sugars - which include glucose and fructose. Fructose is naturally found in fruits and some vegetables. The added sugars we often find in processed foods are typically in the form of sucrose and usually contribute empty calories to our diets. Tree Top Apple Sauce and 100% Juices are sweetened from the fructose found naturally in apples - and nothing more - just as Mother Nature intended. Deanna Segrave-Daly, RD, LDN

Read labels carefully. All beverages containing juice must declare the percentage of juice on the label. Be aware that words such as drink, flavored, beverage, cocktail or ade means the product contains less than 100% juice. Some beverages may only contain 5%-15% fruit juice and have added sweeteners. 100% juice contains naturally occurring fruit sugars - meaning sugar that comes from the fruit itself. There is no high fructose corn syrup or added sweeteners.

  • Does Tree Top use or produce anything with tree nuts?

Tree Top, Inc. does not produce products that contain any quantity of the eight major food allergens.  As a result, an allergen preventive program is unnecessary.

Tree Top, Inc. products do not contain the following:
    • Crustaceans
    • Eggs
    • Fish
    • Milk
    • Peanuts
    • Soy
    • Tree Nuts
    • Wheat
Tree Top, Inc. has a documented HAACP program for every processing line.
  • What are the benefits to drinking apple juice?

Tree Top does fortify many of our juices with Vitamin C.  You can tell if Vitamin C has been added by looking at the nutrition facts part of the label, or the ingredient statement.  While apple juice itself isn't high in vitamins, it is high in what are called "phytonutrients" such as flavonoids and antioxidants that have been found to be beneficial to good health. Visit Tree Top's Apples & Health section to learn more about the health benefits of apples and apple-based products, like apple juice and apple sauce.

  • What equals a fruit serving?

Any fruit or 100% Juice counts as part of the Fruit Group.  In fact, drinking 100% Fruit Juice is an easy way to boost your fruit servings each day. According to the USDA MyPyramid food program, 100% juices can be appropriate substitutes for whole fruits.

The following counts as 1 cup of fruit:

    = 1 small apple
= 1 cup 100% Fruit Juice (like 100% Apple Juice)
    = 1 cup Apple Sauce
  • What fruit exchange does the juice equal?

For apple or other juices, ½ cup of fruit juice is equal to one fruit exchange.

  • Are your cans recyclable?

Yes, all of our Tree Top cans are recyclable.

  • Why didn't I get a deposit back when I recycled my bottles?

CRV (California Redemption Value) applies to aluminum, plastic, glass or metal beverage containers marked with the "CRV" designation or that are considered a single serve container.  Our 100 % fruit juice containers in 46 oz and larger do not qualify for the CRV but are still recyclable.

  • Are your plastic containers recyclable?

Yes, all of our plastic containers are recyclable.

  • Can I freeze the plastic bottles?

Although these containers are food grade, we do not recommend freezing product in these containers.

  • Do your plastic bottles contain BPA?

None of our plastic packagings contain polycarbonate material (Bisphenol-A).  Vegetable and fruit products which have high acidity levels require a protective can liner. Like other food manufacturers, we are searching for an acceptable and safe alternative to the current can linings. We are also researching other types of packaging to replace cans entirely if possible. Please note, all of Tree Top's packaging containers are in compliance with the US and Canadian Food Packaging regulations.

  • Why does the Tree Top gallon container have a #5 and #7 on it?

Recycling symbols are used to classify plastics for recycling.  Symbols 1-6 indicate the plastic in the container is made from defined materials.  If the container doesn't fall neatly into one of those categories, it is assigned a "7".  Tree Top uses plastic containers made from PETE (symbol 1) and polypropylene (PP symbol 5).  Because there is an oxygen barrier, which helps to keep juice fresh in our bottles, they carry both a "5 compatible" and a "7" symbol; however, there is no polycarbonate material in them.

Please note that none of our plastic packaging contains polycarbonate material (Bisphenol-A).

Both our juice bottles and apple sauce containers are in compliance with the US and Canadian Food Packaging regulations.

Production Process
  • Do you use chemicals to peel your apples?

No.  Our apples go through a series of washings before they move to a fruit disintegrator, which is much like a large and powerful blender.  Here the apples are broken into small bite-size fragments, which go through decanters and centrifuges where the solids are removed.

  • How is Tree Top apple juice processed?

On average 50 tons of juicers every hour are washed in a huge rotary drum going through four-stages of washings.  A conveyor moves the fruit to the disintegrator, which is much like a large and powerful blender.  Here the apples are broken into small pieces reducing them to bite-size fragments.

Apple fragments move to the decanters and centrifuges where the juice is separated from the solids.  The juice is then clarified through a multi-stage process until what remains is pure, cloudless, amber-colored juice.
  • Is your apple sauce pasteurized?

Yes, Tree Top pasteurizes its products for the safety of our consumers.

  • Is your juice pasteurized?

Yes, Tree Top pasteurizes its products for the safety of our consumers.

  • What does from concentrate mean?

From concentrate means the removal of much of the water from the juice.  Resulting in thick syrup seven times the strength of the original juice.  The removal of water is achieved by using an evaporator where steam heat and a vacuum help with the removal process.

  • What exactly is fresh pressed (also known as not from concentrate) juice?

To make fresh pressed juice, the apple is first squeezed to extract the juice from the fruit. This fresh pressed juice is then pasteurized, for safety, packaged and sent to the stores for purchase.

At Tree Top, fresh pressed apple juice is only made seasonally to optimize the quality of the fruit. Tree Top’s 100% Fresh Pressed 3 Apple Blend is also unique in that it is made from 3 apple varieties – fresh Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and a little Granny Smith.

  • What is pasteurization?

Pasteurization is a heat treatment that destroys the organisms that could cause life threatening illness.  This heat treatment prevents illnesses like food poisoning, botulism, salmonella and E-Coli.

Tree Top pasteurizes its products for the safety of consumers.

  • What is the difference between Tree Top apple juice and Tree Top apple cider?

The only difference between these two 100% juices is the acidity content.  The apple cider has a more tart flavor than the apple juice.  In other words, we use a tarter blend of apples to make our cider than we do for our juice.
